Tiles

Tile terminology can be confusing. Most types of tiles that are made from clay or a mixture of clay and other materials, then kiln-fired, are considered to be a part of the larger classification called “Ceramic Tiles”. These tiles can be split into two groups, porcelain tiles and non-porcelain tiles. These non-porcelain tiles are frequently referred to as ceramic tiles by themselves, separate from porcelain tiles. Ceramic tiles are often less expensive than porcelain and are available in a huge range of sizes and shapes.
Many tiles, such as ceramic and some porcelain tiles, have a glazed surface. The glaze is a layer of glass that protects the tile base or “biscuit” and can make it more or less slip resistant depending on the finish of the tile. Bathroom tiles for instance are not recommended outside because they usually are a lot smoother and therefore don’t have great anti-slip properties. At the same time, an anti-slip exterior tile laid on a bathroom floor will make cleaning harder because of the coarse anti-slip finish. The glaze is added to the tile biscuit by firing in a kiln at temperatures greater than 1000 degrees Celsius. Glaze is available in glossy, matt, and textured finishes.
It is not unusual to have 3% – 5% of the tile broken to some degree (e.g. chipped edges). Any amount up to 10% is still considered acceptable and within the Australian Tile Standards. Any damaged tiles should be put aside and used for the cuts you will need to make. If breakage is above 10%, notify us so we can arrange to have the issue rectified.
